In Response to Weiner’s Defenders

Screw that guy. Screw him right in his stupid, utterly predictable politician face. And screw you for blindly doing the exact same thing you decry Republican voters for doing when one of their guys gets caught doing the exact same thing as our guy.

I still agree with you that he shouldn’t resign. The man’s a rhetorical dynamo amidst a flock of vaguely donkey-like sheep, and I would hate for the Congress to lose his voice. People calling for his resignation are, by and large, doing so for purely partisan reasons.

And you’re also right that it’s none of my business what two consenting adults get up to in private. But this ceased to be private when he posted Li’l Anthony publicly. When that happens, the voting public deserves to know why. If it turned out he and his wife swing that way, I would say, “Well all right then. I hope this doesn’t hurt him in the polls.” But his wife isn’t OK with this, so now I get to say, “Screw him.”

Yes, the Fourth Estate is full of preening cockbags, and yes, Weiner shouldn’t be judged a bad person if he wants a relationship other than heteronormative monogamy, but these aren’t the central issues of this case. The man fooled around with ladies on the Internet and his wife didn’t know about it. This hurt his wife. That makes him a jerk. And jerks can go screw.

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron."

Eisenhower. (I wish ten million Americans would send this quote to President Obama.)
